Wendy's Complies with Predictive Scheduling Laws in Oregon
Background
Over the last few years, more and more cities and states are implementing "predictive scheduling" laws. These laws require giving advance notice of schedules to employees so they can plan their lives around their shifts. In Oregon, a law passed on July 1, 2020 requires employers to provide work schedules at least 14 days in advance. This applies to employers in the retail, hospitality, and fast service industries with at least 500 employees.
With Breakroom, a Wendy's franchise group was able to comply with this new predictive scheduling law by allowing each store manager to easily post the schedule on Breakroom. Once the schedule is posted, each team member is notified of the new schedule. Team members have access to the schedule through their phones on the Breakroom mobile app, ensuring they have access to the most up-to-date schedule even if they aren't at the store. In addition, above store leadership can track exactly when the store managers posted their schedule and ensure they are complaint with the predictive scheduling law.
Main Challenges
Before using Breakroom, the main challenges Wendy's faced included:
- Above Store Leadership cannot track when store managers shared the schedule
- HR team cannot ensure compliance with predictive scheduling law
- Updated schedules were only available at the store, leading to employees missing their shifts
- Finding last minute replacements for no-shows would require RGMs to text and call each employee which takes a lot of time
Main Solutions
Breakroom helped Wendy's with the following solutions:
- Breakroom Enterprise portal that allows HR and Above Store Leadership to track when schedules are posted by store managers
- Uploading schedule to Breakroom so it is instantly shared with all team members
- A mobile app that was easy to use for employees of all ages and different levels of technological knowhow
- Unified communications across owners, managers, and employees so multiple communication methods are no longer needed
The Outcome
- Full compliance with Oregon's predictive scheduling law
- Sharing real-time metrics with the team more frequently, leading to better results
- Reduced employee churn and boost team morale with employee recognition tools such as Kudos and birthday celebrations
- Decreased amount of time spent on communicating with managers and employees
